Jack McGrory '81 (JD)

Jack McGrory is CEO of La Jolla MJ Management, LLC, a real estate investment company. McGrory served as city manager of the City of San Diego from March 1991 through August 1997. He worked for the City of San Diego for 23 years. McGrory assumed the position of president and chief executive officer of Price Enterprises, Inc., on Sept. 2, 1997. He oversaw the sale of that company. From 1999 to 2000, McGrory was chief operating officer of the San Diego Padres, and from 1999 to 2002 he was president of the subsidiary responsible for building Petco Park and the adjacent commercial development. From 2003 to 2004 he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Price Legacy Corporation, a real estate investment trust specializing in the acquisition and management of retail power centers. From 2001 to 2009, McGrory was manager of The Price Group, which was an investor in more than $1 billion in residential development with Remark, and was the principal investor in Trans West Housing, which built approximately 2,000 houses in Southern California. He was also a director and executive vice president of PriceSmart, Inc., from 2001 until 1999.

McGrory is: a member of the California State University Board of Trustees (appointed by Governor Brown); past chairman of the campanile foundation board at San Diego State University (SDSU); chairman of the Veterans Council at SDSU; chairman of the School of Public Affairs Council at SDSU; Chairman Emeritus of Teach For America San Diego; a member of the Board of Trustees for the Craig Venter Institute; past president of the Mainly Mozart Board of Directors; a member of the Board of Visitors at USD's School of Law; on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of San Diego County; on the Board of Youth Access Academy; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Dan Diego River Park Foundation.

McGrory has also been a member of the Board of Overseers at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the USS Midway Museum. He has been a lecturer for 25 years in the School of Public Affairs at San Diego State University and serves as a lecturer in the Urban Studies and Planning Program at UCSD.

He graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his master's degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. He earned his law degree from the University of San Diego and is a member of the State Bar of California. He was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate in Human Letters from the CSU Board of Trustees.

McGrory was a Marine Corps Lieutenant from 1971 to 1974 and served as a rifle platoon commander. He has five children and seven grandchildren.
